Dear Friends

I would like to thank you sincerely for the wonderful send off you gave me.  Thank you to each of you who was able to attend the Saturday evening party to make it a wonderful social event, and to Chris and Mark for the entertainment.  Also thanks to everyone who attended the farewell service, it was a moving time for me.

I am grateful for the gifts and cards that I have received from the three churches, the Walkden & District Churches Together,  and also from so many individuals.  Your expressions of love and thanks are very much appreciated.    At the moment I haven't spent the cash gifts I received, but will use it for something which will help me in my future ministry.

It was a great privilege to have served St Paul's Peel as your vicar.  Although I was only with you a fairly short time in the overall scheme of things we came a long way together and I hope I've left a mark on the ministry of the church which will bear fruit in the future and also on your lives as brothers and sisters in Christ.  Many of you - you know who you are - have sent me very moving messages of how my ministry has touched your lives. This is really touching and what makes ministry so worthwhile to me.  I hope and pray that the clear vision which God has given the church as a Beacon will remain your guiding light into the future.

It was also a privilege to have been able to support both St John's and St Paul's during the difficult period we all faced over the last 18 months.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for the support your gave me in my final weeks following my unexpected heart attack in March and the peace and space you gave  me to recover properly and quickly.  Thanks to all who attended the Licensing Service at Thorne.  If you are ever near Thorne please feel free to drop in for a coffee.  I am sure I will meet some of you again in the future.  But I am aware that there are some of you I will not meet again this side of heaven.  But this is the great promise of our faith, that we will all meet again in our Father's presence.

Be blessed. Love David. (Revd. David Green)

EDITOR WRITES

On the 11th July, I did a talk in church, it was based on  Colossians 1 v 1-14.   When writing a talk for a Sunday service I always try to find a life experience which can highlight what the reading is getting at - it is not always easy, and sometimes I cannot find anything which is really appropriate, so I look for help on the internet and see how others have explained the reading.

The reading mentions prayer, our role in furthering Gods Kingdom, working for the common good. This  made me think of so many things, but mainly about my personal prayer life, the prayer life of friends and the prayer life of those who attend our Church, the reason being  I have spoken to people who tell me they find it hard to pray - I truly understand what they mean, and many, many people tell me that once they have thanked God for everything, they don’t know what else to pray for, again I can understand this as well.  Sometimes we feel as though we are taking a shopping list to God, not just for ourselves but everyone and every situation we care about, even those we do not know - the peace keeping force, government, councils etc. etc.

Reading Colossians, has helped me in some ways, because I have delved into what prompted Paul to write this letter.  He was under house arrest, possibly chained to a guard in order to prevent his freedom, but to Paul this was prison, albeit not a prison as known to us.  He was concerned for the people of Colossae because he had heard they were beginning to bring non Christian teachings into the Christian faith, this was a mega concern for him.  He began his letter by informing the people he was praying for them, and he was a messenger of God spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ, refreshing their memories that this Jesus was— a man born for our salvation, a man who died on the cross for our sins, a man who rose from the dead, taking the sting out of death and ascending into heaven in order for the Holy Spirit to descend on all who believe Jesus to be the Son of God - powerful stuff but initially hard for us to completely grasp, how can  someone we had never met die upon a cross for us - I can only describe this in one word ’Awesome’.  But during the verses Paul also keeps encouraging us because he was praying,  asking God to guard, guide and strengthen those who were Christians . Part of what he writes is:

Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. Colossians 1:11-12 (Again, powerful stuff.)

I feel the whole reading, not just verses 11-12 are relevant to us today at St. John’s, we need to hold on to the fact it is God we are serving, it is His church and through His grace and our persistence in working to spread the Gospel He will continue to hold us in His loving care - I personally, feel encouraged at St. John’s for all the highs and lows of the past months without a vicar, we have been blessed with so much positive action. Let us all unite in prayer for Jesus’ love to continue to enrich us and flow into the community in which we live.

With love

Prayer Page

As we approach the summer holidays from school, let us please remember the children of our community, praying they stay safe and enjoy their break from school.  Let us also remember those who will be changing school and those who are leaving school and moving on to collage or work.  Let us remember with thanks the teaching staff and carers also everyone else who works with our children, praying for them to have a peaceful and refreshing break.

Let us pray for the team, praying for all our churches - we are one church with three lovely buildings, let us pray for all who are working together to keep things moving in times of difficulty, praying for Steve and family, for Dorothy and Karen, for all the wardens and their families, our readers and all who contribute to the life of the church.

Let us remember in our prayers those who need a healing touch at this time, there are many in our parish who need God’s loving touch at this time, especially those waiting for hospital appointments or out patient treatment, let us pray they will be comforted by God’s love.

Let us give thanks for the work of St. John’s, those who use our community centre and those who lives we touch through acts of kindness.

Can we especially pray for those serving in Afghanistan at this time and those serving in other areas of the world where is conflict,  also praying the odd spate of violence in Northern Ireland will be squashed rapidly.

Let us also pray for the church, here and abroad, for Bishops and Clergy everywhere, praying they will be blessed in the work they do.

Let us also remember our family and friends at this time, also praying for work we all do in order to serve God in community.

Love  Carole Gx
